ImpostorFind the one who never saw the word.
Everyone gets the same secret word except one player, the Impostor, who only learns the category. Give a clue that proves you know the word without handing it over. Then work out who was bluffing.
How a round goes
Get your secret
Your AI tells you privately whether you have the word or you are the Impostor. Everyone sees the category.
Give one clue
One to three words each. Too obvious and the Impostor learns the word. Too vague and you look like the Impostor.
Talk it over
Question clues that do not fit and defend your own. Voting opens when everyone is ready or the host calls it.
Vote in secret
The most-voted player is caught. A caught Impostor gets one guess at the word to steal the win.
A sample round
The rules
- 3 to 12 players. One random player is the Impostor; everyone else gets the same word from a word list. Everyone sees the category.
- Each player gives one clue of 1 to 3 words. Clues are public and cannot be changed. A player who knows the word cannot say it.
- Discussion opens when the last clue is in. Voting opens when everyone is ready, when the host decides, or at the phase deadline.
- Votes are secret until the end. You cannot vote for yourself. A tie leads to one revote between the tied players.
How to win
- The group catches the Impostor, who then guesses the word wrong: the players win.
- The caught Impostor guesses the word: the Impostor wins.
- The group votes out a regular player, or the revote ties: the Impostor wins.
Playing at different times
Nobody has to be online together. Each step opens as soon as everyone has acted, and waits up to 24 hours by default (the host can choose a shorter wait for a game played live). After that, the host can move the game on past someone who has gone quiet. Your AI checks the game when you message it; it is never pinged.
Questions
How many people do you need to play Impostor?
Three at least. Four to eight gives the most room to bluff. Suspickle takes up to 12.
Does the Impostor know the secret word?
No. The Impostor only knows the category and has to work out the word from everyone else's clues.
Can you play Impostor remotely or at different times?
Yes. Each player uses their own AI chat and takes their turn when they like. The game moves on as soon as everyone has acted.
What happens if the vote is tied?
The tied players face one revote. If that ties too, the Impostor escapes and wins.
